The Givenchy Fall/Winter 2025 show marked Creative Director Sarah Burton's glorious debut for the storied French fashion house. On the Paris Fashion Weekrunway, which revealed her first-ever looks for the brand (albeit, Elle Fanning and Timoth&eacute;e Chalamet gave a preview with their red carpet Oscars looks), there was a fascinating dialogue between the house's heritage and a resolutely contemporary vision.
When Burton reunited with patterns from founder Hubert de Givenchy's first collection during the renovation of the house at 8 Avenue Alfred de Vigny, she felt an immediate connection with her own creative process: that of returning to the workshop, to cutting, to craftsmanship, per show notes. This discovery revived in her the very essence of the house, where purity and precision blend to express a femininity that is both strong and vulnerable.
The collection, which takes shape from the body, reinvents the French label's classic silhouettes with structured suits, defined waists, and shapes that fuse masculine and feminine codes. Backless dresses, knotted skirts, sharply cut trench coats, and carefully designed accessories (such as tulle mules and jeweled bags) symbolize this meeting between past and future. In all simplicity, fabrics are transformed, unpredictable shapes emerge and lines are redefined through modern couture gestures. The legacy of Hubert de Givenchy is there, but it's reinterpreted in a new and bold form, carried by a modern femininity, full of desire and power, thanks to the new creative director who was appointed to the role September 2024.
