From Dior Book Tote to the now-classic Dior Caro, the French house’s roster of bags grows season by season. But nevertheless, Lady Dior will always be the jewel in the crown.

The chronicle dates back to 1994 when Dior first conceptualised the top-handled bag and called it “Chouchou”, a French term to express fondness and affection. A year later, the work of art landed on the arm of Lady Diana by destiny as she received it as a gift from France’s former First Lady Bernadette Chirac during her trip to Paris.

It was the first time the bag made its appearance, and according to legend, the Dior atelier had it created in just a night. In 1996, it was officially given the name “Lady Dior” as a tribute to Lady Diana, who adored the quilted bag and was rarely spotted without it.

It didn’t take long for Lady Dior to become a sensation and the epitome of chic and elegance. An embodiment of Dior’s savoir-faire, Lady Dior has never stopped being reinvented throughout the past two decades.

Its geometric weave of the Cannage motif inspires the modern icons of Dior, including the Dior Caro and the newest Dior Vibe bag, while its clean, architectural silhouette serves as an empty canvas that allows the imagination to wander.

In 2016, Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri initiated the Dior Lady Art project as she continued to establish her vision for the house of Dior through the empowerment of art. Each year, Dior invites artists across the globe to work closely with the Dior atelier to reinterpret the ever-classic Lady Dior with their very own codes, giving them total freedom to express the world they see through their lens.

With the Dior Lady Art project entering its sixth edition this year, Dior enlisted twelve artists from around the world including Dubai, Shanghai, Tokyo and Dublin to manifest their culture and identity by transforming the Lady Dior bags into wearable objects of art. Conceived as a dialogue between Dior and the cultures of the world, Dior Lady Art #6 reveals a tour de force in the audacious line-up created by Manal Aldowayan, Gisela Colón, Johan Creten, Genieve Figgis, Gigisue, Antonin Hako, Zhang Huan, Leonhard Hurzlmeier, Yukimasa Ida, Daisuke Ohba, Li Songsong and Lina Iris Viktor.

Each piece is completed with the reworked “Dior” charms in a nod to Monsieur Dior, who is famously known for his belief in the talisman. These masterpieces will soon land in Kuala Lumpur, one of the cities selected to launch the Dior Lady Art #6 collection.
