Glenn Martens, 41, is known for his innovative, cutting-edge and distinctive designs. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp and previously worked with Jean Paul Gaultier. Martens's biggest career milestone was his 11-year run with the Y/Project brand. As creative director, he received significant recognition from both professionals and fashion lovers. Martens is currently the creative director at Diesel, another brand managed by OTB.

He succeeds John Galliano, who left Maison Margiela in December 2024 after a decade-long tenure. Martens becomes the third creative director in the brand's history, following founder Martin Margiela and Galliano. Martens will be responsible for overseeing both the couture and ready-to-wear collections for the French fashion house.

Renzo Rosso, president of OTB, expressed his confidence in Martens' talent and vision: “I have worked with Glenn for many years. I have witnessed his talent and I know what he is capable of taking over Maison Margiela.”

Glenn Martens was unexpectedly appointed to the position of GDST of Maison Margiela less than 1 month after the departure of John Galliano.

Glenn Martens’ appointment as creative director at Maison Margiela comes as a surprise, given that he’s still working for Diesel, and there have been other high-profile names rumored to be in line for the French house’s December vacancy. But there are compelling reasons why Martens is a natural fit, including:

Known for his innovative thinking : Martens’ tenure at Y/Project for over a decade has demonstrated his talent. Martens has possessed a radical mindset, a quick wit to reconcile avant-garde design concepts, balanced with commerciality.

Success at Diesel: As creative director of Diesel, Martens revitalized the brand, making it appealing to a young, fashion-forward audience. His creative approach led to both commercial success and a strengthened brand identity.

In line with Maison Margiela's philosophy: Martens' design philosophy - characterised by the ability to deconstruct clothing and tell stories through creativity - is closely aligned with Maison Margiela's avant-garde heritage. His frequent use of techniques such as Trompe l'Oeil and his innovative use of fabrics reflect the brand's experimental spirit.

Confidence from OTB's leadership: Renzo Rosso, chairman of OTB Group (parent company of Maison Margiela), has expressed strong confidence in Martens' vision and capabilities. Rosso's backing underscores that Martens is well-backed to help the brand thrive in the next phase of its journey.
