Model Atikah Karim headlines on the our August 2020 "Hero" issue
With the ongoing global health and economic crisis taking over the world, L’Officiel Malaysia’s August 2020 is here to remind us that there are heroes living among us to instil some much-needed hope to get us through the pandemic.
And to star on this Hero Issue (which we are giving full access for free down below!), we have, none other than, Malaysian born model Atikah Karim (@tiksg)– a talent that has risen to the international stage and walked for countless designers and brands including Rick Owens, Lemaire and Marine Serre – on the cover shot by her in-real-life partner Danny Lim (@dannny.lim).
Decked in some of this season’s edgiest statement pieces for our cover story (and Saint Laurent on the cover), our very own local beauty Atikah Karim returns from the Big Apple for a one-of-a-kind yet truly Malaysian cover story while giving us an insight on what it is like being the hero of her own narrative.
In our interview Homecoming Queen, she says, "I wish I had taken a leap out of Malaysia at the right moment and the right time. Back then, I felt like the agency didn’t know if I were able to book jobs; the clients didn’t know how to cast or categorise a Southeast Asian girl. I wish I had been more positive and open-minded in dealing with all the rejections! Remembering my first experience in London makes me feel depressed."
Onwards to our other feature highlights, we celebrate iconic women of all style tribes across the decades in the past, present and future – accompanied by a resounding clarion call of optimism, inclusivity and female empowerment from the recent fashion runway in Heroine Chic.
Over at the beauty front in What Goes Around Comes Around, we also witnessed a similar trend with a wide array of radical Fall/Winter 2020 looks that riff heavily off makeup from the past to evoke a strong sense of nostalgia and liberation.
Thoughtfully crafted piece of jewelleries too are treasures with hidden depths and Today In Herstory aims to shed a light on the zeitgeist of the era these precious jewels were born in. And a hero’s tribute is not complete without us tipping our hats to our fellow local frontliners and essential workers who put their lives on the line to care for others in What It Means To Be Alive.
