Supassara Thanachat, our June 2024 cover star, goes unstoppable
With her debut in a major international film, L’OFFICIEL cover girl Supassara Thanachat has emerged as a force to be reckoned with in showbiz. And is she ever ready for it.
Thai actress Supassara Thanachat, better known as Kao, arrived with her crew a tad late, entering the warehouse for the cover shoot and immediately greeting everyone with an amicable smile. She’s shooting her first foreign film, Kong Tao, in Kuala Lumpur at the time of this writing. It features a diverse cast, including Hong Kong actor Philip Keung, Singaporean star Glenn Yong and our own multifaceted Bront Palarae.
In the film, Kao plays a dogged journalist determined to find the truth behind a series of grisly beheadings that once shocked Thailand. Along the way, she meets a group of daring YouTubers who have come to the country to investigate paranormal activity. They work together to reveal a maze of secrets, including horrifying revelations.
A fashion star in her own right, Kao is known for her daring and distinctive style. In an age where what we wear reflects who we are, it’s astounding to consider how a well-puttogether ensemble can have a positive effect on our self-esteem. “For me, there’s nothing quite like looking in the mirror and experiencing a burst of confidence because I’m completely satisfied with my appearance that day. The simplest of outfit choices can completely transform my mood and set the tone for an awesome day,” she says.
Kao shares that her go-to style emanates a combination of laid-back, versatile and sassy energy. “I prefer to explore various approaches and experiment with my clothing rather than just follow every trend,” she says. “Even though I’m not great at keeping up with the latest trends, I still remember how exciting it was to rock the short, low-waist skirt that was all the rage last year. The process of putting together outfits that showcased my flair while also fitting in with the current trend was rather enjoyable.”
The challenge of keeping up with the ever-changing fashion industry is real, “but the secret to what I call ‘fashion happiness’ is to always wear what makes you happy. What matters most is being comfortable in your own skin and fearlessly expressing yourself through your clothing choices.” In other words, with an assertive grasp on who you are, you can incorporate any fad into your style with ease, elevating it in ways you wouldn’t have imagined possible.
Demonstrating a remarkable sense of self-awareness, she politely asks to shoot the cover look as soon as possible while her energy level is still high.
“To feel like the amazing, confident person that I am, my favourite clothes are those that highlight my curves. In the end, it comes down to selecting pieces that accentuate my best features. In retrospect, I don’t think I could name every single shift in my style that has occurred throughout the years. Still, I feel good about saying that I’ve grown steadily. What I wear has been greatly influenced by my life experiences, both professionally and personally. I have accepted the lessons I have learned from each stage of my life and used them to become the most polished version of myself, both in terms of style and character,” she says.
We decided to switch to a topic that the L’OFFICIEL readers are also interested in — her beauty secrets. “When I have an early morning start, I follow a magical nighttime routine that does wonders for me. As I get into bed, I put on a face mask to help my skin and mind be ready for the day ahead. I prioritise getting enough beauty sleep. It’s about finding that perfect balance between external preparation and internal well-being,” she says. Like slipping into a warm embrace of self-care, it ensures that Kao will face the day with renewed vitality and energy.
Confronted with unrealistic beauty standards daily, Kao shares that she has reliased that learning about and embracing herself is the key to freedom. “This process of coming to know and appreciate myself has been an incredible adventure. I have found joy and fulfilment in embracing my uniqueness and celebrating the qualities that make me who I am, and I wish to inspire everyone to celebrate what makes them special.”
What drove Kao to pursue a career in acting was a mix of fate and unexpected circumstances. Through a few lucky castings, she found herself in the right place at the right moment, allowing her to enter a world she had never imagined. Her interest in acting has grown and strengthened as time passed. “It has become a part of who I am, a burning desire to explore new roles that test and challenge my limits. Every performance is a chance to learn more about how to tell a story and bring characters to life in a way that people can relate to,” Kao says. As the interview progresses, it becomes clear that what keeps her driven is the thrill of inhabiting different characters and exploring their intricacies.
Before concluding, we ask about her most memorable experience to date, to which she replies, “New opportunities always inspire me. Kong Tao is my first international endeavour, and I am quite excited about it. Speaking in English is a challenge for me because it takes me out of what is familiar to me. To face it head-on, I dedicated myself to extensive preparation. Getting out of my comfort zone has not only broadened my perspectives but also improved my capacity to adapt and evolve as an actor.”
