At the time of writing, I have started watching the first episode of Family by Choice, starring our cover star Hwang In-youp. The coming-of-age romantic comedy marks his return to the small screen after a two-year hiatus, following his breakout role in the 2020 hit True Beauty, which skyrocketed him to fame, and his subsequent performance in the 2022 mystery drama Why Her.

When our shoot in Seoul took place back in August, the 33-year-old star had just wrapped up filming and was enjoying a break before preparing for his next role: a special appearance in the upcoming drama Dear X, featuring Kim Yoo-jung and Kim Young dae. As we settled into the day’s work, I realised that, like his character Kim San-ha in Family by Choice, underneath his cool — or as Koreans call it, “chic” — exterior, there was an ease to his presence. He spoke with warmth and genuine curiosity between shots, allowing the Swarovski pieces to take centre stage, their brilliance contrasting beautifully with his understated charm and effortless style.

Acting is undoubtedly one of the most competitive industries. How do you stay motivated and handle the challenges in this field?

I continue to challenge myself and stay motivated in this field because being an actor at this moment is exactly what I have longed for and imagined since I was a child. Whenever I feel discouraged, I remind myself that my current self is the realisation of what I once dreamed of, which gives me the strength to keep going and move forward. Another reason is that, as a child, I nurtured my dream by watching great actors perform, and I want to inspire others in the same way. The thought of even just one person somewhere out there who might watch me and think about becoming an actor, that makes me strive to do my best. I believe that being able to inspire others and have an impact on someone’s dreams is truly wonderful and meaningful.

You act as a high schooler in both True Beauty and Family by Choice. What’s the biggest difference in preparing for both characters?

True Beauty is based on a popular webtoon, and the character Han Seo-jun was extremely well-loved, so we spent a lot of time thinking about how to bring such a widely imagined character to life and present him realistically. On the other hand, Family by Choice also has a beloved original work, but our focus was more on the story behind the character rather than just the portrayal of the character itself. The character Kim San-ha is a reserved child who endured great trauma for someone so young and matured early. I put a lot of thought into how to express a character living with such deep wounds and how to make him resonate with viewers. I made a significant effort not only in verbal expression but also in actions to evoke this character.

Can you share a memorable moment on the Family by Choice set?

The last scene of the shoot is the most memorable for me. Even though we actors are not real siblings by blood, we had to portray a family as close as any family could be, just like the title Family by Choice suggests. So, we spent time together like a real family. As the filming wrapped, I felt a great sense of regret and sadness. The final scene needed to capture a happy moment, but I remember struggling to hold back tears while acting due to those feelings.

Additionally, the thought of parting with the character Kim San-ha, whom I had portrayed for nearly a year, and saying goodbye to the actors and everyone who worked hard to create the drama was emotionally overwhelming. Looking back, I felt very happy during the filming of Family by Choice. I hope our story is conveyed well to the viewers.

It’s been six years since you first started acting. How do you think your method of acting has evolved since then?

That question is something I often ask myself and ponder over. In my early days of acting, I felt a strong pressure to excel at everything. I was very nervous and made frequent mistakes, which led me to be very harsh and self-critical. As a result, those times were frightening and stressful rather than enjoyable and happy. However, I am truly grateful that during that period, the directors and many senior actors whom I worked with offered their support and advice, helping me to grow a little more each year.

Now, I believe I can approach acting with more ease than before. I try to recall those passionate and joyful moments and remind myself to act in a way that resonates with and entertains our viewers. Though I still have much to improve, I am working hard to become a better and more mature actor.

Aside from acting, you also lend your voice to two OSTs in the past. Is that something you’d like to pursue more?

Since I love music, and if the opportunity arises and the viewers enjoy it, I’d like to continue participating in music projects in the future. One of the greatest advantages of being an actor is that the time I spend on each project is recorded, allowing me to look back and reflect even after time has passed. I think music serves as a great tool for reminiscing as well. Beyond music, I am open to trying any activities that might be necessary.

What advice would you give to aspiring actors looking to break into the industry in their late 20s, like you did?

I don’t believe there is an age that’s too advanced. Acting is something anyone can do and challenge themselves with. As long as you have a genuine desire to convey the story of the characters you are portraying and share your true feelings with others, that’s what matters. If you don’t give up and continue to ponder, observe and listen to the stories in your heart, I am confident you will become a wonderful actor. I support your dreams.

Would you be open to creating a fashion collection or brand in the future?

Before becoming an actor, I worked as a model and enjoyed fashion, so I’ve considered creating my own brand. While I still love clothes, I’ve also developed a great interest in interior design and decorating my own space. If I were to start a brand, I wouldn’t want it to be limited to just clothing. Instead, I think it would be interesting to create a brand that introduces items reflecting Hwang In-youp’s lifestyle and personality.

What does your jewellery mean to you?

I believe jewellery is one of the most special and wonderful items for expressing oneself. Jewellery is like a delicate work of art crafted from something beautiful and precious. Therefore, when giving a gift to someone, proposing to a loved one or expressing one’s feelings, jewellery can carry the most significant meaning. I think that’s why people smile and feel happy when they see jewellery.

You’re done filming Family by Choice. What’s next for you?

It looks like I’ll be presenting a new side of myself as the character Heo In-gang in the project Dear X. In the drama, the famous actor Heo In-gang appears outwardly gentle but has a heart full of wounds. I will be showcasing this character in my own style, so I hope you look forward to it and show lots of love.

Your popularity in Southeast Asia is undeniable. Are there any plans for round two of fan meetings in Southeast Asia soon?

I am always grateful for the constant support and love of my fans, and I’m thinking about how I can repay them. If you’re asking about my plans, they’re still a secret. However, I can give you a hint: I believe I’ll soon have news that my fans will like. Until we meet again, please take care of your health and I wish you joy and happiness every day. Thank you so much for your ongoing interest and love. I will continue to work hard to show you my best.
