10 questions with Kim Jae-won, lead actor of Netflix's Hierarchy
A rising star taking over the K-drama scene with a Gossip Girl-esque story, Kim Jae Won is the perfect villain to fall in love with.
"Hierarchy" is a buzzing K-drama series on Netflix that follows a transfer student's journey into his new school, Jooshin High School, an institution where the top elite 0.01% dominate. The student's arrival, bearing a hidden secret, begins to unravel the established hierarchy among students.
Netflix reported that "Hierarchy", with two leading actors Kim Jae-won and Lee Chae-min, garnered 3.5 million views between the 3rd and 9th of June 2024. This achievement placed it 2nd in the Netflix TOP 10 for non-English TV shows.
In "Hierarchy," Kim Jae-won portrays Kim Rian, the heir to the Jooshin Group, which owns the high school. A charismatic leader with a vengeful side, this marks Kim Jae-won's debut in a leading role. Before this, he had notable roles in "Our Blues" (2022), "Stealer: The Treasure Keeper" (2023), and "King the Land" (2023) and he has also been active as a model since 2018.
L'Officiel gets the golden opportunity to have an exclusive interview with the rising star to talk about Hierarchy and his aspiring journey as an actor.
What was the turning point for you to transition from a model to an actor?
I have been modelling since middle school. I started because I liked it, but over time, I realized that maintaining a chic and expressionless demeanour on the runway didn't suit my bright personality.
Even though I love the cool aspects of modelling, I aspire to become an actor with a variety of personality and charm, which is more free and expressive.
As an upcoming actor, what has been the biggest lesson you’ve learned in your career so far?
I learned a lot about being a good senior in this field. In particular, senior actors Lee Junho and Lim Yoona delivered showed a good appearance & image during the filming of “King the Land”. From them, I learned the mindset that a lead actor must have on set and how the actor's attitude can shape the atmosphere.
For “Hierarchy”, working with actors my own age, I aimed to embody the positive attitude I learned from my seniors. Moving forward, I am committed to foster a comfortable atmosphere on set, as I believe this is essential for a natural and authentic acting to come out well.
How do you feel about your current career growth?
I believe that significant growth comes from enduring numerous growing pains and that plenty of hard work is essential to reach your desired goals. I want to continuously show a good performance for the rest of my life for my precious and irreplaceable fans.
What is the biggest achievement you dream of as an actor?
I aspire to be an actor who is always eagerly anticipated. I want people to recognise the charm of Kim Jae-won, believe in my talent, and look forward to hearing my name.
Among the characters in “Hierarchy”, who is closest in personality to your real self?
I think my real personality is similar to 'Kang-ha,' and in terms of love, he resembles 'Kim Rian.' I have a bright and active personality, but when it comes to love, I am really a single-minded person. Right now, I truly love all the fans who support me.
What is the most difficult scene you had to prepare and do in “Hierarchy”?
To portray the role of 'Kim Rian,' which is the exact opposite of my real personality, I practised countless times in front of the mirror to perfect a cold and cynical expression. To maintain a sharp image, I adhered to a strict diet for seven months. Additionally, I made effort to become personally close to actress Noh Jeong-eui, who played 'Jeong Jae-i.'
I felt a heavy sense of responsibility in portraying Kim Rian's charisma and the convincing portrayal of his love with Jeong Jae-i. Maintaining Kim Rian's sensitivity throughout the six to seven months of filming was the most challenging part.
You were wearing a school uniform in “Hierarchy”. When you were young, what kind of school life did you have?
I have been interested in the entertainment industry since I was young. I was active on the swimming and track and field teams, and I've always loved English. I’ve been thinking that I wanted a career that would allow me to utilize all of my talents.
I concluded that becoming an actor was the best path. To pursue this goal, I attended an arts high school and majored in theatre and film in college. I think I've had a desire for acting since I was young, and I have never regretted it.
There’s no doubt you have a very busy schedule. How do you manage to maintain a healthy balance and mindset through it all?
I try to drink as much water as possible. Being someone who attaches great importance to responsibility when I am in charge of something, I don't eat much or sleep deeply during filming, so I make an effort to stay hydrated and drink water as often as possible). I don't want to get sick due to dehydration.
Additionally, I strive to maintain a positive mindset in which, no matter what happens I will always be grateful for what I'm doing right now and towards my fans who gave me so much love. In fact, maintaining positive thoughts daily leads to a positive life.
Is there anything you would like to compliment yourself or want to tell yourself like ‘You are doing good’?
I believe I still have many shortcomings, which is why I'm constantly striving to become a better person. However, the one thing I want to compliment myself is, I have never lost my love and gratitude for my fans. I exist because of them, and thinking about my fans motivates me to move forward, no matter how difficult the challenges are.
Please tell us more about your coming plans and activities for year 2024.
I intend to keep putting my best effort into my work. Currently, I'm immersed in filming a new drama, and soon you will be able to see my better image. Now feels like the right time to reciprocate the love and support I've received from my fans throughout my life.
If the opportunity arises, I hope for a day, when we can hold a fan meeting in Malaysia, where I can personally meet my fans and have a good time together. Until then, please take good care of yourselves and let’s meet with smiles. I'll be eagerly waiting for that moment.
