Our cover girl this month, Rila Fukushima, is one of the rare model/actress hybrids that has shaken both fashion and film with much success.

You may recognise her face from the edgy editorials and campaigns she’s landed with prestige brands and titles as well as her breathtaking turns in films and shows like Wolverine, The Arrow and Game of Thrones.

Already a star in her homeland, a role in the highly anticipated sci-film Ghost in the Shell alongside Scarlett Johansson is set to rocket Fukushima’s profile even higher the whole world over.

You seem to get cast a lot in fantasy and sci- roles. Are you a fan of those genres or is there some sort of casting by type going on here?

I don’t really feel like I’m being typecast, especially since a lot of the work that I do in Japan is quite different from my Hollywood roles. I do love the fantasy and sci- genres, and all of my work in the West so far have given me an opportunity to try something more physical and challenging, which I always look forward.

Do you have a dream role or a director you would love to work with?

I was really hoping to get into the new Blade Runner directed by Denis Villeneuve. Not only is he an amazing director, but I am also a huge fan of the original. I would die happy even if I got to play a plant or a piece of furniture as long as I get to be in it.

And how do you usually prepare for a role?

I try to become the character. With the more physical roles, it means a lot of time spent getting on the movements, and ensuring that I am portraying the character as honestly as I can. With some of the quirkier roles, I tend to work on the mindset; getting myself mentally into the role.

How would you describe your sense of style?

It’s hard to put a label on the type of style I gravitate towards but my approach to fashion is all about keeping it simple and comfortable while drawing from both modern and vintage pieces to outline and complete whatever out t I choose.

"I enjoy taking myself out of my comfort zone, whether it is the subject matter or the physicality the character has to face."

What makes you say yes to a project?

It’s all about the script and the challenges it presents me. I enjoy taking myself out of my comfort zone, whether it is the subject matter or the physicality the character has to face. It’s about trying something new whenever possible.

Apart from acting, where else do you find fulfilment?

When I have time, I love reading – especially manga – and trying to spend as much time with my family and close friends as possible.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I think I’d like to be able to read people’s minds. It would make things a lot easier. Sometimes, questions that you may want to ask will not have to be asked. And you won’t have to waste your time trying to figure out what someone really wants as a birthday gift.
