Set on Place Joffre, Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2022 show was an ode to fashion shows. Virginie Viard’s latest collection was a nostalgic trip back to the late ‘80s and early ‘90s as photographers rushed to the side of the raised runway. Models twirled and posed as they strut their way down the catwalk as if it was a show from 1989.

Inspired by fashion photographers, Viard chose to honour them with a series of portraits by Inez and Vinoodh that featured Lily-Rose Depp, Alma Jodorowsky, Jennie from Blackpink, Rebecca Dayan, and Quannah Chasinghorse all holding cameras.

“Today I call upon photographers. I love the way that they see Chanel, it supports and inspires me,” Viard noted. “It’s a magical object and a sexy gesture, which evokes so many memories.”

The season’s garments opened with models dressed in bathing suits, bike shorts, and miniskirts as a way of illustrating Viard’s take on the new sexy. The collection showcased the #hotgirlsummer concept in a mature perspective — simple white and gold bathing suits, multi-color crochet and denim Chanel suits, cardigans with sculpted shoulders. It's sporty meets class in a way that perfectly encapsulated the former era of fashion.

The Chanel Spring/Summer 2022 show was all about evoking nostalgia as it encapsulated the retro glamor and chicness of the '80s fashion show. Viard captured the essence and magic of the fashion industry by cheekily highlighting the undisputed energy of the runway.
