6 things we can't wait to see in Crazy Rich Asians
The first official trailer of Crazy Rich Asians has just dropped and the entire world is completely hyped for this overtly extravagant all-Asian cast Hollywood production.
And while most are ogling at Henry Golding's smouldering charm and ripped body (we admit to that too), as a true Crazy Rich Asians fan, there's so much more we are excited for.
But before that, here's the first trailer to get you pumped like us.
From Michelle Yeoh's domineering act as Eleanor Young to that split-second appearance of Gemma Chan as Astrid Leong, the trailer has gotten us on the edge of our seats for the premiere on 17th August 2018.
And like with any book-to-film adaptation, we couldn't help but refer to the book itself to relive the moments and have our fingers crossed that the film will do the books justice – be it characterisation, plot twists and most importantly, the DRAMA.
And here are 5 scenes that we can't wait to see in Crazy Rich Asians:
[Caution: Minor spoilers for those who haven't read the book yet]
While her role in the first book is minor (compared to the elevated drama in the second and third), Astrid Leong plays a pivotal role in the Crazy Rich Asians world as the "goddess" and cousin to Nicholas Young.
So far in the trailer, we only have two split-second scene of her – one where we see her face and another where she spoke a line with her back facing us. We need more!
And one of her most memorable moments in the book was that shopping spree where she bought a pair of Pocahontas-like VBH earrings from jeweller Stephen Chia during her more "troubled times".
Of course, her many outfits mentioned in the book is something we are dying to see including the Gaultier Majorelle-blue sleeveless halter-neck dress with gold cuff bracelets she wore at the wedding.
When it comes to the world of Crazy Rich Asians, nothing is crazier than Tyersall Park, the family estate of the Youngs.
Owned by matriarch Shang Su Yi, the sheer extravagance of the place is an envy to all even when described in words.
That's why the expectations are high for the movie and we can't wait to see how crazy rich it looks!
From the Gurkha bodyguards to Thai handmaidens and that flower-viewing party extravaganza on everyone's lips.
If you've read the book, you will love the "new money" Goh family, which centres around Goh Peik Lin (played by Awkwafina), who is Rachel Chu's best friend.
Described to be loud, pretentious (but super nice!) and filled with gold motifs, the Goh family is tremendously hilarious and from the looks of the trailer, it is something we can't wait to see.
Who can say no to a gold-filled mansion with overtly gaudy designs and a loud family featuring both actors Awkwafina and Ken Jeong? We can't wait for that brunch scene to happen.
Another amazing group that we can't wait to see gather is the legion of crazy rich housewives led by Eleanor Young.
From the gathering of aunties including Eleanor, Carol Tai and Nadine Shaw for bible studies to Nicholas's real aunts like Alix, Victoria and Felicity, there is no shortage of dramas when these ladies are around.
We particularly love the scene where Eleanor and her friends gather to gossip and investigate Rachel Chu. That juicy session is 100% delicious!
Another dramatic moment we are dying to witness is Araminta Lee's bachelorette party on her private island.
Whether it is the luxurious private jet or the crazy grab-all-you-want fashion shopping spree at the resort, that leg of the story is a spectacle for all.
Above all, let's not forget the bloody fish scene that got Rachel mortified to the core, all thanks to the Araminta's entourage of mean girls.
If you think the ladies are dramatic, wait till you see some of the boys in Crazy Rich Asians.
From the overly competitive Eddie Cheng who flaunts frivolous fashion to the spoilt Bernard Tai who is the craziest of them all (hint: that closet scene in the end with Kittie Pong), the men in the Crazy Rich Asians universe is truly out-of-this-world.
Colin Khoo's bachelor party is something we look forward to too, especially since it involves a heli-escape to Uluru in Australia.
Crazy Rich Asians will debut in cinemas worldwide on 17th August 2018.
