"Go big or go home" is what Huawei has in mind when they set out to launch the Huawei Mate 20 series in London in audience of over 2,000 tech geeks (us included).

The buzz and expectation surrounding the latest addition to the much revered Mate family, up to the day of the launch, had been nearly deafening and Huawei, as expected, delivered the goods and then some.

And if the collective gasps and thunderous applause during the keynote at the ExCel London was any indication, the series is indeed worth the hype, carrying ultra-modern devices including the Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 X, Porsche Design Huawei Mate 20 RS and our personal pick, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Here’s why this particular smartphone especially slays!

The Camera

All those stylish OOTDs, on-fleek makeup and mouth-watering food snaps mean nothing if you don’t have the right camera on your hand – which is why the Huawei Mate 20 Pro rises to the top of our list.

With a 40MP main camera, 8MP telephoto camera and the all-new 20MP 16mm Leica ultra wide-angle camera, this streamlined gadget is basically a compact version of professional cameras.

Built to be more than just a vanity mirror, the camera system also supports 3D Face Unlock, whereby the 3D Depth Sensing Camera System meticulously encapsulate your most unique facial features and authenticates your identity within 0.6s at a false acceptance rate of under 1/1,000,000; a mind-blowing feature that's also shared by the Porsche Design Huawei Mate 20 RS

As a matter of fact, the Huawei Mate 20 Series novelties share plenty in common. They're all embedded with modern mechanics including macro distance (which gives great result even if the subject is only 2.5cm away from the lens), AI Spotlight Reel as well as the AI Portrait Color video mode.

The Design

As it is the case with all the Mate products, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro also comes with a FullView display and is measured at 6.39-inch.

The chassis is curved on all eight sides and seamlessly lead to the glass back which employs the Hyper Optical Pattern to give you that shimmery effect that only highlights the colourway; we opted for Twilight, which gradient goes from pitch black to spectral blue.

Meanwhile, the three lenses of the Matrix Camera along with the sensor are symmetrically aligned in the middle of the phone back, a four-point design that's bound by a polished metal frame.

It takes a second to get used to the concept but the idea behind it is a form of an ingenuity – word from the ExCel was that it's inspired by the Mahjong tiles.

The Chip

The Huawei Mate 20 Series also employs the brand's highest performing system on chip to date, the Kirin 980, which in layman's term means that it offers performance unlike its predecessors and supremely smooth user experience.

An added advantage to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the top-end flagship supports 4.5G LTE Cat. 21 standard - the first in the world - which enables you to download anything at a lightning speed (well, not literally – up to 1.4Gbps).

The Battery Life

With all the things that we need to carry around (especially when sporting a minaudiere or a fannypack), who has the energy or the space to lug their power banks?

That's among the reasons why the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is the perfect companion for fashionistas alike – it offers a 4200mAh battery, with 15W Huawei Wireless Quick Charge feature and supports 40W Huawei SuperCharge, which gives the device 70 percent charge in just 30 minutes

On top of that, the device is equipped with Wireless Reverse Charge mode, which enables it to turn itself into a power bank for selected electronic devices supporting wireless charging!

The Operating System

Comes with a smart operating system based on Android P, EMUI 9.0, the Huawei Mate 20 Series is the testament of when fashion meets function.

The ergonomic design, streamlined settings menu and new gesture navigation support, are only starters. The series also introduces new AI features that will cater to your lifestyle - it even has the easy shopping and food calorie counting features!

Priced at RM 2,799 for Huawei Mate 20 and RM3,599 for Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the Huawei Mate 20 Series  is now availablw at all authorised retailer
