Maserati's all-new Grecale SUV has everything you look for in a car — and more

Two words: everyday exceptional.

Think of Maserati and its best-selling models such as the Levante or GranTurismo will come to mind, but there’s a strong contender that should be on your radar. Enter the Grecale — an SUV that is the epitome of quiet luxury. Like the other models in the brand’s line-up, the car sticks to Maserati’s tradition and is named after the winds. The Grecale, in particular, derives its name from Gregale, the strong, cool Mediterranean wind, and it aims to bring a new wave of modernity into the automotive industry, in terms of technology, performance and design.

Over a year after it was first previewed, the compact luxury crossover SUV has officially launched in Malaysia, and it’s the second SUV under the larger Levante. Take one look at the Grecale and you’ll be captivated by its exterior. Stylish yet minimal, contemporary yet timeless, the Grecale features an Italian design that commands attention. Look at the front and immediately notice the distinctive low grille that references the MC20 sports car, adorned with the iconic trident logo. Its rear features slim boomerang taillights that are inspired by the Giugiaro 3200 GT, tuning up the sporty feel. Its side profile is one of our favourites, as its sleek lines and fluid body come in full view.

What’s under the hood is equally — if not more — noteworthy. The top-spec Trofeo is equipped with the impressive 3.0-litre twin turbo V6 Nettuno engine, producing 530 hp and capable of a top speed of 285 kph (fun fact: the engine is also used in Formula One). Alternatives including the mid-range Modena and the base GT variant with a mild-hybrid engine are also available. An innovative e-Booster that’s powered by the 48V Belt Starter Generator (BSG) gives the lower-spec models that boost in energy and maintains their peak performances.

With a dimension of 4,846 mm in length, 1,670 mm in height, and 2,163 mm in width including mirrors, the Grecale undoubtedly has the best-in-class spaciousness. That’s not all. Maserati has transformed over the last few years, and the innovation is apparent in its newer models. The model is equipped with more than 33 inches of display surfaces that amp up that futuristic, avant-garde vibe. There’s the 12.3-inch TFT Cluster screen that enables you to access the Maserati Intelligent Assistant (MIA); the 8.8-inch comfort display that lets you control the lights, seats, climate, clock and other settings. Your backseat passengers are not left out in this digital realm, as the rear comes with a 6.5-inch touch screen for the three-zone climate control system.

An enjoyable drive is never complete without a great in-car sound system. Accompanying the Maserati roar is an audio system that’s specially developed by Sonus Faber — known as the Italian Artisans of Sound. With up to 21 speakers and bespoke subwoofer technology, your journeys will come with a 360 sound that can only be truly understood when experienced.  Maserati Connect — which will be made available in Malaysia in the future — also contributes to its charm, as owners can turn the engine on or off, beep the vehicle’s horn, lock and unlock doors and more through the app.

From start to finish, it’s safe to say that every single detail in the Maserati Grecale is carefully thought out, as the three different specs can cater to one’s needs regardless of their lifestyle. All set to take on the grand touring spirit? Select your drive mode and let the Grecale accompany you on your next journey.
