Cheeks Out: Priscilla Ono on the Fenty Beauty Summer 2020 collection

And in celebration of the arrival of this collection online on 17th April 2020, we have an exclusive interview with the one, the only Priscilla Ono (@priscillaono), Global Makeup Artist of Fenty Beauty, where she talks about her favourite Cheeks Out, makeup tips and her creative process working with Fenty Beauty.

With the new Fenty Beauty Summer collection, the Cheeks Out collection has garnered quite a lot of attention since it was teased on social media. Tell us a little bit about the products within.

I’m really excited about Fenty Beauty’s newest launches – the Cheeks Out Freestyle Cream Blush and Cream Bronzers. They are the perfect products for creating that all-natural, fresh-faced glow.

The Cream Blush and Bronzer give a really natural-looking wash of colour that brightens and enhances your complexion. They have a unique balm-like texture that feels incredibly lightweight and just melts into your skin. Plus, they are sweat and water-resistant. I love the flexibility when it comes to this blush – you can use just a touch for a natural look or build for bolder colour. Some of the shades may look pretty vivid in the pan, but they actually have a sheer finish so it’s really easy to build up the colour to your desired look.

The Cheeks Out Cream Bronzer comes in 7 shades and is the perfect product to create a soft, warm sun-kissed bronze. Plus, one of the shades is the cult-favourite Amber, which is the best contour shade.

What are your favourites from the new Cheeks Out collection?

They’re all so pretty! But if I had to call out a standout shade it would be Amber from the Cheeks Out Cream Bronzer collection. You might remember this shade name from the Match Stix Matte collection. It’s the same perfect cool tone contour shade for people in the 100-200 skin tone range.

The new Cream Bronzer has an easy-to-blend, natural, fresh finish that’s creamier than the OG Match Stix Matte, which is perfect for a contour that’s soft and natural-looking. One of my personal favourites from the Cheeks Out Cream Blush collection is the Cool Berry shade, which is the perfect pinky mauve shade with a slight shimmer that gives the skin an extra dewy finish.

Do you have any tips or tricks on using the new Cheeks Out collection and Match Stix Glow Skinstick to maximize that perfect summer beauty look?

Start with a light base – a thin layer of Pro Filt’r Primer and Foundation just to even out your complexion, and a little Instant Retouch concealer under the eyes to conceal and brighten. Next, I would use the Cheeks Out Freestyle Cream Bronzer to warm up your complexion – apply it under the cheekbones, jawline, on the top of your forehead and on the side of your nose.

This will sculpt and add dimension as well as giving natural warmth to your face. Then use the Cream Blush on the cheeks to create a natural flush. Both are creamy and melt into your skin, so they give a really natural summer glow.

And then the Match Stix Glow Skinstick is a great new product, that creates a dewy finish – I use this on the high points of the cheeks, the brow bone, and cupids bow.

On the topic of creativity and creating looks, products and campaigns for Fenty Beauty, what is your creative process like?

There are so many aspects of my job as a makeup artist that I love, and one the most important is the process of getting inspired! I love researching for looks, and that can be on the Internet, in books, movies, or museums – creating mood boards is so key to the creative process.

Fenty Beauty has always been about embracing beauty regardless of age, race and gender. In your view, how has the makeup industry evolved compared to when you are growing up?

Makeup is at an all-time high, and I believe social media has a lot to do with it. Makeup trends and products are becoming more and more accessible. I mean, I see 12-year-olds applying the most perfect eyeliner wing! Having access to tutorials is the most helpful thing in all aspects! I also think makeup is going to be even more fun and adventurous - More risks!
