I got a wavy perm at AUBE and loved the dreamy result

Take this as a sign to get your transformation.

The thought of getting a perm had been lingering in my mind for the longest time, and it wasn’t the easiest decision to make for someone with commitment issues. The clash between having dreamy waves and maintaining healthy hair left me in a quandary. However, it wasn’t until I stumbled upon AUBE, a salon that seemed to promise the best of both worlds. Intrigued by my friends’ glowing reviews about stylist Steve Lee’s (@aube__stevelee) expertise in creating texture, I made my way to AUBE with a mixture of excitement and nerves.

Situated in the neighbourhood of Bangsar, AUBE offers a slice of an urban oasis, echoing its headquarters in Tokyo. Stepping inside, I knew that I was in for a tranquil experience. My makeover began with a consultation, telling Steve the style I was looking for — soft, wavy curls with effortless French girl hair. I also expressed concern about its compatibility with my thick layered hair. After taking time to understand my hair goals and condition, Steve briefed me on what I could expect and reassured me of the curl size that would work with the layers.

My hair was washed and trimmed before the perm. Getting rid of the excess length and split ends is essential for a good shape that endures, according to Steve. He explained that a digital perm (also known as “hot perm”) was the way to achieve the desired soft and naturallooking waves. The entire process revolved around two actions: first, the softening of the hair texture, followed by the neutralisation of the curls. Throughout the perming process that involved both chemical and heat, I was surprised by the total comfort.

Before unveiling the transformation, Steve pampered my mane with a Milbon treatment for intense moisture. “One of the most common misconceptions about perms is that it’s lowmaintenance,” shared Steve. In reality, chemically treated hair could use some regular treatments because “losing moisture is part of the deal, and restoring hair health and shine is vital for the long run.”

As he dried my hair using Dyson’s Supersonic with diffuser, Steve thoughtfully walked me through how to take care of and style my waves daily. “Go for a wide-tooth comb to detangle,” he said, recommending products that hydrate and hold the curl. “If you’re feeling more defined and bouncy curls, cup the ends with the diffuser, or you can just gently move the dryer around in circular motion for more natural waves,” Steve added. Air-drying is an option too!

Now, looking back at this past week since I took the plunge and got the perm, I’m totally vibing with this French girl inspired “I-woke-up-like-this” hair. The curls add volume and movement to my hair, waving goodbye to its dull thickness. I would say it does take some effort to look effortless, such as a healthy dose of moisturising cream to keep the curls happy and some blow-drying know-how for an undone finish. My hair has been receiving affection and compliments, giving me a quiet confidence boost which has made the commitment truly worthwhile. My only regret? Not discovering AUBE’s perm magic sooner.
