5 amazing collabs Karl Lagerfeld contributed to the beauty world
Karl Lagerfeld is definitely one of the most influential designers in the fashion industry, who is known to create more than a dozen collections a year for Chanel, Fendi and his namesake label.
While fashion is his strongest suit, Karl also loved the world of beauty and has also shared his imagination and personality through multiple beauty collaborations with the likes of Shu Uemura, Sephora and ModelCo.
To commemorate Karl's brilliant legacy, we dived into his portfolio to gather our five favourite collection of cosmetics and fragrances that he has contributed in.
KARL LAGERFELD x SEPHORA (2011)
Known as Karl's first cosmetic collection, this collaboration with Sephora was one made to celebrate the holiday season in 2011, which saw the Kaiser put his hands on creating the product, packaging and colour palette.
Consisting of eye shadow palettes, where each colour was made in the shape of Karl's own silhouette, two colour nail polishes and a cosmetic bag, the collection was made in a white, black and gold theme for that classic Karl luxury touch.
And let's not forget about the adorable snow crystal ball that comes with it!
'MON SHU' KARL LAGERFELD x SHU UEMURA (2012)
In the following year, Karl moved on to collaborate with Shu Uemura for the next Holiday Collection. The relationship between Karl and the Japanese brand was rather special as Karl was known to have used Shu Uemura's colour palettes to sketch his designs.
And for this project, a mascot was born, featuring a girl doll wearing a white school uniform with makeup in red tones and a short bob named 'Mon Shu'. The collection consisted of eye shadow palettes, lipsticks, false eyelashes, eyelash curlers and many beauty accessories such as mirrors and cosmetic bags.
SHUPETTE BY KARL LAGERFELD x SHU UEMURA (2014)
In 2014, Karl worked with Shu Uemura again – this time he starred his pet kitten Choupette as the main model and inspiration for the collection! In the collection design, each product had a cartoon reinterpretation of Choupette and showcases many products, as always, such as shimmer blush powder, eyelash curlers and cleansing oil.
This time around, Karl was also the photographer who shot the campaign images with model Josephine Skrive and his beloved Choupette.
KARL LAGERFELD x MODELCO (2018)
His last beauty collaboration before his passing, the Karl Lagerfeld x ModelCo was probably his biggest beauty project ever, featuring over 50 products in the collection, with even a full brush set made.
For this one, Karl has carefully crafted every step and element of the collection – from design to colour tones, texture and functions, he was the one who made it all happen.
PERFUMES by KARL LAGERFELD (1975 – 2018)
Cosmetics aside, Karl Lagerfeld also had a passion for fragrances and scents. His first smell came under the Chloé brand in 1975 with a white floral scent. At that time, the label on the perfume was written as Parfums Lagerfeld.
Through his years in the business, he has created countless other scents for us and his latest work were the Fleur De Murier, a scent for women, and Bois De Yuzu, scent for men, which is currently sold under his namesake label, "Karl Lagerfeld".
