A deep-fake reality: Balenciaga Clones Spring 22 show
Creative director Demna Gvasalia delivers a deep-fake runway for Balenciaga Spring 22 collection in collaboration with French art director Quentin Deronzier.
Themed Balenciaga Clones, the collection features 44 women’s and men’s looks, all paraded by artist Eliza Douglas, who has either opened or closed every Balenciaga show by Demna Gvasalia, and her 3D modelled clones. In a radical way, the designer is calling the generation who lives in the moment as much as they live in the lens and screens to rethink the “shifting senses of reality through the lens of technology”.
Set in a minimalist runway where guests are seated down with their smartphones on hands, the show begins as the “models” march down the aisle to the AI covered “La Vie En Rose”. Built upon planar tracking, rotoscoping and 3D modelling, the show mirrors an environment that is too perfected and polished to decode between real and artefact.
The looks are textbook Balenciaga. Tailoring is deconstructed and reengineered to hug the body in different silhouettes. Hoodies are served as statements of individuality and authenticity, such as the one that says "No Comment" and another one stamped with a blank square and reads “Your Ad Here”.
The collection introduces several new shapes for its accessory arsenal, including the Fast Clutch, Monday Shopper, Balenciaga Crcos 2.0 and a line-up of The Hacker Project follow-up. The iconic GG monogram is translated to double-B motifs, embellished on a selection of leather goods and classic Gucci’s designs against a tone-on-tone palette. A limited-edition bag that reads “This Is Not a Gucci Bag” is set to launch in November 2021.
