Maria Grazia Chiuri challenges conventional notions of femininity and feminism in today’s society.

From Catherine Dior, Édith Piaf, and Juliette Gréco to her creations were inspired by Catherine de Medici, women have always been the muses for Dior in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s mind – and it was no different for the Spring/Summer 2024 collection with a juxtaposition of narratives about womanhood and femininity at its core. It was clearly the case when provocative phrase including – “I am not only a mother, wife, daughter. I am a woman,” “I don't belong to anyone else. I always make a phone call to myself,” and “Save your marriage. Iron properly” – started flashing in the yellow and fuschia-coloured show space.

The 78-piece collection encapsulated the true spirit of womanhood and her multifaceted nature, whether it is inherent or developed from a culture of patriarchy. This was depicted in ensembles like long, pleated skirts, tailored suits and sheer gowns with boots; biker jacket with black lace dresses; deconstructed off-the-shoulder button-down shirts and floor-length coats with raw-edged hems – featured mostly black, white, and neutral tan and beige hues. Other highlights were abstracted prints, a fresh take on the renowned Mille Fleur design, and a series of crochet pieces in an ivory colour scheme that seemed like they were from the 1940s.
