A Tribute to Ren Hang
It has only been three days since the passing of Ren Hang, renowned Chinese photographer and also the one who shot our March 2017 cover spread.
Remembering the legacy left behind by the talented provocateur, L’Officiel Malaysia has decided to extend another 10,000 copies of the March issue as a tribute to this amazing talent and to meet the overwhelming requests from our readers, the photographer’s long-time admirers, as well as the fashion world at large.
Our managing editor Monica Mong had the opportunity to be in his presence as they collaborated for the title’s March issue on Girl Power – dedicated to women, femininity and sexuality, featuring cover girl Rila Fukushima.
We, at L’Officiel Malaysia, are especially devastated by the tragedy, and at the same time, felt incredibly privileged to have worked with the prodigy merely months ago.
On his sudden passing, Monica says, “He has always regarded the human body as a medium of pure aesthetic. One without moral or social criticism, he represents a new generation of Chinese culture.”
A self-taught photographer who began in college by taking surreal nudes of friends, Ren Hang’s overtly provocative work has caused a lot of controversy in his homeland China but has received acknowledgement by many including fellow artist Ai Wei Wei.
