All you need to know about Raf Simons' move to Prada
The speculation of Raf Simons joining the Prada family was not new news, however, he was rumoured to join Miu Miu in the initial buzz.
But everything has finally demystified last night when Prada announced the appointment of Raf Simons as the brand's co-creative director (so, that means no Miu Miu as far as we can tell right now) to work alongside with Miuccia Prada herself in all creative process and decision making for the Italian fashion house.
Raf and Miuccia have always been in good terms, ever since Raf was designing for Jil Sander, which was then part of the Prada group. During a private press conference with very selective few, Raf says, "Prada is a brand that I have been interested in my whole life. I cannot wait to express to all of you the dialogue I will have with Mrs Prada and her team."
He continued, "To be really honest, Mr Bertelli approached me right after my exit from Calvin Klein. Miuccia and I had a conversation about creativity in today’s fashion system. And it brought me to open dialogue with many designers, not just Mrs Prada. We have to re-look at how creativity can evolve in today’s fashion system.”
Very few designers in this era can match the wavelength of the legendary Miuccia Prada but as we saw in a conversational interview of Raf and Miuccia from System Magazine, we know that Raf is a perfect fit for Italian label.
And thus the die was cast and Raf will be officially joining the Prada family on 2nd April 2020 to begin his tenure with Miuccia and is set to debut their first co-designed collection in the coming September show at Milan Fashion Week for the Spring/Summer 2021 collection.
When asked of the structure of the partnership, Raf says, "When you have all the things to talk about or all the things that you’re thinking about, it’s more strength when two creatives believe in it, and when two creatives love it, it has more strength, in my opinion, that one. So, it’s as simple as that. When we both believe in it, we’re going to do it. When one doesn’t believe in it, we’re not going to do it."
Alas, this will probably be the most anticipated show of the September fashion week season. Brace yourself for this creative duo's brilliant debut!
