The Fendi by Marc Jacobs capsule collection is a fashion dream come true
An I(con) for an I(con).
Throw it back to September last year — Fendi kicked off Spring/Summer 2023 Fashion Month with a special runway show to celebrate its iconic Baguette bag’s 25th anniversary. For such an important milestone, Silvia Venturini Fendi and Kim Jones did not hold back, tapping Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co., Sarah Jessica Parker and Porter to honour the House’s signature piece. New York was chosen as the destination for one simple reason: that’s where the bag’s cult status in pop culture history was born and sealed.
From clothing to accessories, the collection references the well-loved design in different aspects — be it the item, a moment in time or the spirit of the place. But one thing all the line-ups have in common is the enjoyment and sense of celebration that the Baguette has always made the wearer feel. The Marc Jacobs capsule is no different.
“In my opinion, Marc is the King of fashion in America. He is also a master of branding and experimentation, particularly with logos. Here, Marc has designed a Fendi collection — it is not a collaboration, rather it is an interpretation. In it, there is a sense of freedom in excess and joy, where he was allowed to do whatever he wanted,” states Kim Jones, Fendi’s artistic director of Womenswear.
The 10 looks from the capsule collection truly pay homage to the Big Apple (the city may have been the place where the Fendi Baguette enjoyed early success, but it’s also where Marc Jacobs and his eponymous brand call home). The glitter and grit of New York City come through as the shimmer from the rhinestones and silver references the glass facade of buildings, and the pops of neon yellow take inspiration from the workman’s safety vest. Oversized parkas, parachute skirts and frayed denim jackets amp up the utilitarian vibe. Big fluffy hats and the Baguette stamped with Jacobs’ own “The Tote Bag” typeface are the perfect finishing touch.
