Who wants a pair of Rick Owens designed Birkenstocks?
Following in the (rather literal) footsteps of Balenciaga, Rick Owens has partnered with a distinctly unfashionable footwear brand to created a limited edition pair of soles.
Where Gvasalia reimagined a pair of rubbery crocks into platform shoes, Owens has created a pair of hairy Birkenstocks. Is this truly what function meets fashion means?
Owens is the first designer to have a collaboration with Birkenstock, which is a brand founded all the way back in 1774. The team-up comes as part of Birkenstock’s Box project, which aims to reposition itself in a more sartorial light.
As such, a mobile pop-up shop, The Box, will be parked outside the Rick Owens store on La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles and will be available to the public on 17th April 2018 onwards.
There, consumers can grab four different interpretations of varying fabrics, including pony hair, felt, and full-grain leather.
For those not based in Los Angeles, you can purchase the collaboration online from Rick Owens and Birkenstock on 17th April 2018 as well.
