You might have spotted K-pop powerhouse ITZY and Hyuna or Chinese stardom Ouyang Nana and English singer Dua Lipa (on the cover of Rolling Stone) copping delicate and captivating intimate garments as of late and these are all none other than designer Rui Zhou's masterpieces.

Her signature peekaboo cut-outs are welcomed by fashion stylists for its high impact and unique editorial flair. Zhou didn't initially have her mind set on reworking bodysuits, but the garment's nature allowed her to manipulate the body form through draping and layering.

What does she want to emote through her designs?

Zhou finds comfort in draping, cutting, and fitting; she hopes the soothing energy is also received by the wearer. “I don’t want to make people feel noisy or crowded,” she says.

“I really like a peaceful world – a very soft, gentle emotion.”  With her recent fall 2020 collection, Zhou introduces muted colours to play into this seamless feel, like a second skin.

Why is Rui Zhou a one to watch?

Her form-fitting bodysuits made of knit fabric complement most body shapes and offers an element of mobility and support. Besides its appeal to celebrities from Chloe x Halle and Solange, her designs speak towards the new generation, as millennials and the Gen Z community advocate for non-binary expressions of individuality.

“I always put more attention on the expression of people’s fascinating skin and body instead of trying to differentiate female and male figures. So, my brand intends to fit every gender type,” Zhou explains.

What’s next for Rui Zhou?

Her exploration of the relationship between the skin and the fabric continues. Zhou notes that she “will continue working on negative shape and extending the silhouette. Also, I am planning to collaborate with more artists and platforms to create meaningful exchanges.”
