Enter the Rado True Square x Thukral & Tagra “Over the Abyss”
Time pivots to connect people through a wristwatch that is universal and unique, without compromising on comfort and durability.
Rado’s recent artist collaborations have given the watch brand’s repertoire more than a bright spark. Its latest partnership with New Delhi artist duo Thukral and Tagra crosses over into social design that ponders on our temporality as individuals and the importance of human connections.
“‘Over the abyss’ is a meditative proposal. The deep state of mind where thoughts float and multiply in the deepest of the abyss. Stuck in a novel of science fiction, we deal with an isolated space and time. The only silver lining of living in a moment is a fragility to form into new,” the design duo reveals of their design inspiration.
"A solitude state of mind. The image of the community at a time when we all are experiencing isolation, and a representation of the reunions with loved ones that we all fervently hope may soon be possible.”
The True Square “Over the Abyss” watch is the result of the artists’ creative experiment in partnership with Rado, the Master of Materials.
Its unique time display superimposes the local time of the wearer to several time zones of the world, symbolised by 37 hands that are painted in a gradation of blue to pink hues in the middle of the dial.
Two discrete but legible SuperLuminova dots indicate the local time on the cool timepiece with a 38 mm matte blue high-tech ceramic case whose square shape with gently rounded corners is an ode to Rado’s iconic ’70s silhouette, now refreshed for the 21st century.
That’s not all the wristwatch offers—upon flipping to its case back, the duo’s painting called Dominus Aeries—which explores visions from the future with references from the past— springs a delightful visual surprise that ties in with Thukral & Tagra’s design philosophy: being aware of what is around and finding ways to bring ideas to life.
“To be able to create our version of this watch is an opportunity to bring something unique to the experience of reading time. We decided to have a watch with lot more arms in order to feel connected with a lot more time zones, and share the experience of viewing time,” they conclude.
