Michelle Yeoh gives empowering speech at kering Women in Motion Awards 2023
Michelle Yeoh continues to slay 2023.
It’s not an overstatement to say that 2023 is the year of Michelle Yeoh. After winning the Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG Awards for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, the artist is presented the 2023 Women in Motion Award by Kering and Festival de Cannes. Since its launch in 2015, the Women in Motion Award is dedicated to celebrate and honour women in the field of culture and arts whose vision and creativity help to drive evolution.
From dancer to actor and producer, Michelle Yeoh is known for challenging stereotypes through her works, and she’s never afraid to touch on topics like diversity, racism and ageism. At the ceremony, she dedicated her acceptance speech to “every little girl with big dreams, for the young woman paving her way, for every woman my age breaking out of every box she had been placed in.”
“Art moves like water, capable of causing great beauty, great terror and great change. I have watched the currents throughout my entire career and I am watching the tides turn now. For too long, we as women have been left out of rooms and conversations. We have been told the door is closed to us. Well, Virginia Woolf once said, ‘There is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind,’” said Michelle Yeoh. “I am holding the door open for you. We will never let it be closed again.”
