If you don’t already know, since 2017, Rolex has been the proud sponsor of the Oscars® ceremony. Held at the Dolby® Theatre in Hollywood and telecast live in more than 200 countries worldwide, this extravagant annual event is the arbiter of the global cinematic landscape that celebrates the excellence, inspiration, and technical genius from which cinematic masterpieces are made.

Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf capped it as an ode to “a work done handsomely” in the cinematic universe — an art, a science and an industry. And the role of the Oscars® ceremony is to shine a light on each of these vital facets.

Maybe not as well-known as the podium Oscars® ceremony is the Oscars® Greenroom, the antechamber of the Oscars® or lounge where nominees and presenters congregate before and after stepping onto the stage at the Oscars® ceremony, before returning (for some) with a coveted statuette.

Rolex goes the extra mile to develop a unique immersive experience and new decor for the Greenroom each year. The 2023 Greenroom it created evoked a tropical forest as a tribute to nature as well as to the explorers and scientists whose actions serve to protect the planet. This meaningful connection is a poetic expression of Rolex’s commitment to preserving the Earth’s ecosystems as part of its Perpetual Planet Initiative, launched in 2019.

This year’s Oscars was a spectacular affair that delighted all with amazing breakthroughs in the history of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The notion of breakthroughs resonates well with Rolex, whose founder Hans Wilsdorf, achieved two quantum leaps in watchmaking. In 1926, he invented a revolutionary waterproof wristwatch, the Oyster, and in 1931, he unveiled the Oyster Perpetual, the first waterproof, automatic-winding wristwatch, equipped with a Perpetual rotor.

For more than five decades, Rolex has pledged a long-term commitment to global culture encompassing music, architecture, cinema and the Rolex mentoring programme through the Rolex Perpetual Arts Initiative. The Swiss watchmaking brand has long made its presence felt in Hollywood, particularly with its longstanding and strong support of the world of cinema. It works hard to champion artistic and technical excellence in filmmaking alongside the perpetuation of knowledge, the conservation of the art and the rise of new talent through various platforms: Testimonees (Martin Scorsese and James Cameron), its partnership with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the institution, the awards and the Academy Museum in Los Angeles) and the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative.

Rolex’s enduring partnership with the Academy is particularly symbiotic, sparked by converging values to uphold excellence in film and preserve its legacy for future generations, to ignite the imagination and celebrate cinema’s universal purpose. Just as the legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese, a Rolex Testimonee, says, “Movies are the memories of our lifetime, we need to keep them alive.”
