What to look out for at the Malaysia International Film Festival 2023
Happening 23-29 July 2023 at LaLaport BBCC.
Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) is back for its sixth edition. With a mission to champion creative talent, MIFFest has been exploring boundless possibilities and opportunities for people in the film industry. Its upcoming edition, themed “New Take”, puts great emphasis on filmmakers’ new venture after confronting the challenges of contemporary cinema.
Read on to discover what to look out at the 6th MIFFest:
JOHNNIE TO CHAIRS THE JURY PANEL
The jury panel led by Johnnie To features esteemed artists and directors including Truong Ngoc Anh from Vietnam, Ryuichi Hiroki from Japan, Zizan Razak from Malaysia, and Eric Khoo from Singapore. Together they will evaluate and decide the winners of the awards. 40 films out of over 300 submissions will be selected for screening whilst the top 10 and grand winner will be unveiled during the award ceremony.
SYLVIA CHANG TO BE HONOURED LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Sylvia Chang wears many hats in the movie industry: actor, writer, director and producer. “Chang's contributions to the industry have left a lasting impact. Her unforgettable performances and critically acclaimed films have resonated with audiences worldwide,” shares MIFFest.
THE OPENING & CLOSING TITLES
Mark Lee See Teck’s Eraser featuring the final on-screen appearance of the late Adibah Noor will make its world premiere as the opening film of the 6th MIFFest. Meanwhile, Kanny Chang’s See You at the Rally will bring the audiences to explore the intricate bond between a father and a son at the closing.
THE NON-COMPETITION CATEGORY
Featuring a diverse line-up of thought provoking films, the non-competition category is no less exciting. Among them are the World Premieres of ADOIII JIWA KU by Steve Yap from Malaysia and the Malaysian Premiere of No Bears by Jafar Panahi from Iran.
MIFFEST TAIWAN PROGRAMME 2023
Adding further strength and depth to the annual event, Kuo Ming-Jung curates the MIFFest Taiwan Programme 2023. A series of screening and engaiging forum will be carried out under the theme "Going Forward, Looking Back: The Reluctant Evolution of Contemporary Taiwan Films".
COLLABORATION WITH BUCHEON INTERNATIONAL FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL (BIFAN)
The unique partnership between MIFFest and BIFAN aims to delve into the wolrd of genre cinema. The International Premiere of Kim Sung Hwan’s Iron Mask and the Asian Premiere of Konaka Kazuya’s SINGLE8 are the highlights of this collab.
