Sigi Skin has finally launched in Malaysia after much anticipation. We caught up with Xenia Wong, the founder of the vegan beauty brand, as she shares her take on green beauty, sunscreen and more.

Tell us more about the beginning of Sigi Skin.

Having a good and consistent skincare routine is very important. At Sigi Skin, we really want to create fuss-free products that people can seamlessly incorporate into their existing routine.

What set Sigi Skin apart from other vegan skincare?

Before I started Sigi Skin, as a consumer, I always feel like what I want is missing from the market. For example, unlike most of the products that come in jar and tub, all of our products are airless packaged with pumps, making them more convenient and hygienic to use. And instead of rolling out multiple kinds of cleansers or moisturisers, we focus on perfecting one formula that every skin type can reach for without confusion.

Sigi Skin has garnered a loyal following in a span of just five years. What's your take on building your own beauty community?

We love to interact with our community and we do a lot of educating on skincare and green beauty through our contents. At Sigi skin, we pride on our 100% recyclable packaging, all of our products are boxed in recycled paper printed in soy ink. After receiving feedbacks from our community, we cut down on excessive packaging by using different sizes of mailer box based on the order size. And with our refillable Garden Party Deep Cleansing Clay Mask, we encourage our clients to contribute to reducing the environmental footprint. For ingredients, we choose green and clean ingredients that are close to the production facilities including, but not limited to, Korea, to reduce carbon emissions.

What is a myth about vegan skincare you want to debunk?

That vegan skincare is not as effective. Vegan skincare means that the formula is cleaner, and safer for your skin and the planet. At Sigi Skin, our products are also infused with clinical-proven actives to deliver the best of both worlds.

Name three hero products from Sigi Skin.

First of all, never skip your SPF. Sigi Skin made its debut in 2018 with Morning Glow, our physical sunscreen. It’s rare for beauty brands to begin with a sunscreen as it’s one of the most challenging to formulate and costly to produce, but I swear by sunscreen and really want to help people to love their SPF routine.

After a really bad sunburn experience when I was younger, I never skipped my SPF no matter how uncomfortable it makes my skin feel. I realised that I wasn’t the only one who felt intimidated by sunscreen because of its texture—we didn’t really have a lot of options back then—and I started to do a lot of research on it.

I insisted on a physical sunscreen because it creates a barrier on our skin to reflect UV rays and it is pregnancy and nursing safe. Bringing Morning Glow to life wasn’t easy, I went through a lot of labs that offered me ready-made formulas before I finally met a team that took a chance on me, listen to me, and create the Morning Glow from scratch with me.

I’m also very proud of our Daylight Oasis Vitamin C Serum which contains 15% L-Ascorbic Acid and exosomes to help improve the radiance of your complexion. I will say our Kaleanser Face Wash is also an essential. People sometimes underestimate the importance of having a good cleanser in their skincare routine, it should be one that leaves your skin nourished and supple.
