The Blancpain Ladybird Colors collection evolves in style

The ultra-feminine timepiece hits a new chromatic stride just in time for summer.

One is forgiven for just thinking of Fifty Fathoms at the mention of Blancpain. The first modern diver’s watch was introduced in 1953 by Betty Fiechter, the first woman to head a watch Maison at the beginning of the 1930s, and her nephew Jean-Jacques Fiechter.

But just as significant for the Swiss watch brand is the Ladybird collection, which was equipped with the smallest round movement when it was pioneered in 1956 by the same visionary duo, only a few years after unveiling Fifty Fathoms. It is not an exaggeration to say that Blancpain has played a revolutionary role in the history of feminine watchmaking, further backed by the fact that it debuted the first automatic ladies' wristwatch in 1930.

Evolving over the decades, the Ladybird has continued to keep up with its combination of bejewelled allure and mechanical watchmaking. This Spring, the Ladybird Colors is fitted with two new small seconds and moonphase complications.

Anchored by a textured mother-of-pearl dial set with 70 diamonds, the new Ladybird Colors in red or white gold offers a myriad of variants: midnight blue, peacock green, forest green, lilac or turquoise Roman numerals, echoed by the hues of the straps.

Interesting asymmetrical touches appear on the dial elements, such as the offset Roman numerals, as well as delicately tapering gem-setting on the inner ring, and small seconds and moonphase indicators.

The sparkle of the 34.9 mm diameter case is driven by 58 diamonds (of approximately 2 carats). Flipping the wristwatch over, its transparent case back reveals the synchronisation of the gold oscillating weight with the case colour while the circular openwork pattern perfectly harmonises with the dial design.

Powering the small seconds and moonphase versions are the Calibre 1163 and Calibre 1163L respectively, both of which are equipped with a four-day power reserve and a silicon balance spring that ensures accuracy, in addition to comfort and style.
