5 standouts from 2022 Penfolds Collection
The Australian winemaker turned global by showcasing wines from three continents for the first time.
The release of Penfolds 2022 collection made history by launching wines comprising of three country-of-origin portfolios for the first time ever. In addition to the familiar Australian labels and the second release from its California venture, this year Penfolds has broaden its horizons to Bordeaux - which resulted in two inaugural French wines that made up part of its 2022 lineup. Here are 5 of the standouts (and our favorites).
Penfolds II Cabernet Shiraz Merlot 2019
Made in partnership with Dourthe Bordeaux and blended and bottled by Penfolds in South Australia, this great blend is truly a “wine of the world”. The name “Penfolds II” represents the two winemakers coming together through French techniques and Australian method in a stunning blend of Bordeaux framework and Barossa shiraz body.
Penfolds FWT 585 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Petit Verdot 2019
One of the two inaugural French wines, the FWT 585, which stands for French Winemaking Trial, is a Bin wine made of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, conceived at Cambon la Pelouse Winery with Penfolds Senior Winemaker Emma Wood on the ground. This Bordeaux blend in classic claret style captures crunchy, dark berry fruits and earthy herbal tones.
Penfolds Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Leading the California collection is the brilliant Bin 149, another worldly expression with Napa Valley and South Australia blend that matured in French and American oak. Strong tannic foundations and depth and richness of black fruits and enduring generosity of structure on show here are something to behold with promising potential.
Penfolds Grange 2018
The legendary Grange simply needs no introduction. The most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, 2018 Grange attains the grandeur and depth that we’ve come to expect from in this iconic Shiraz. With nuances of black fruits, liquorice, high cocoa dark chocolate, coal steam as well as more savoury elements of beef and mushroom braise, the keywords here are big, bold and beautiful. And the going price for this icon? $1000 AUD.
Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2019
Pure and expressive, there is a quiet elegance to St Henri, and quite an intriguing counterpoint to the audacious Grange. Picked out from some of the finest South Asutralian shiraz, there is a dark, warm and medium-bodied finish with a relaxed persistence.
