I’m chronically online. I could blame it on the nature of my job that requires me to stay synced, but if I’m being honest, I’m attached to the convenience and fun of the digital world. A full-on digital diet might be a little too rich for my current reality, but a digital detox? Sounds just right when I feel like taking a break.
Situated across the 13th floor of W Kuala Lumpur, the AWAY Spa is reminiscent of a posh underground lounge where one can refresh and recharge. Lights are dimmed and warm in the waiting room; deeper inside, vivid colours, playful scents, imaginative sounds and a soothing glow— very W-coded — come alive to evoke a sense of modern comfort. The mind and body are now ready to be immersed in the sanctuary of the Aromatherapy Steam Bath, Bio Sauna with Infrared Lights and Vitality Pool. Here, my digital detox experience began.
“AWAY Spa is where serenity meets style, and we believe in creating immersive environments that enhance the overall experience,” shared Lisa Low, the hotel manager of W Kuala Lumpur. “Each treatment is meticulously designed to allow a transformative escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life by promoting a deep sense of well-being.”
Inspired by the growing need to disconnect and reset, the Digital Detox at AWAY Spa is a holistic ritual that supports the body’s natural detoxification process and eventually helps one tune into oneself. It engages all senses with a series of immersive treatments: a detoxifying steam bath and sauna, a relieving detox massage, a purifying detox body wrap and a revitalising detox facial.
A sense of escapism and tranquillity washed over me as I left my devices behind in the locker, and settled in the steam bath and sauna to open up my pores in preparation for what was to come. During the massage, my therapist, Nadia, incorporated thermal mud that targets cellulite and releases toxins along with targeting techniques like pushing, knuckling, twisting and scooping to ease knots and improve circulation. I truly enjoyed the focus on my neck, shoulders and back. Those deep strokes and stretches were slightly uncomfortable at times but they relieved the tension of my tech posture from the extended screen time.
Wrapping up my Digital Detox journey was a facial using Comfort Zone’s made-in-Italy products. Nadia worked on relaxing my facial muscles and re-energising the stressed complexion with gentle yet precise pressure points that felt so heavenly I dozed off for a bit. She was also incredibly attentive to my skin condition and curated the product lineup to meet my skin’s needs that day. As someone with sensitive and reactive skin, I felt reassured knowing that every product was selected with care.
I stepped out of the spa reset, with my body feeling less stiff, more mobile and at ease. The escape was short and sweet, and I know where I can go back to whenever I need to unplug.
